This month, you and I will be celebrating the Jubilee of Our Mother of Perpetual Help. Pope Pius IX gave her Icon to the Redemptorists in 1866 with the mandate to “make her known throughout the whole world.” For 150 years we have preached Perpetual Help and the glories of Mary to countless people.
Devotion to Perpetual Help began immediately once the Redemptorists received her Icon. Early places of devotion in the current Denver province were St. Alphonsus in New Orleans St. Michael’s Parish in Chicago. St. Alphonsus “The Rock” in St. Louis holds the distinctive honor as the birthplace of the weekly, perpetual novena.
Mary is part of my spirituality. Since becoming a Redemptorist, her Icon has been a vital part of my life. I ‘discovered’ Perpetual Help when I became interested in the Redemptorists. My parents told me the Redemptorists “had Perpetual Help,” and how she was part of their life. While in the seminary I joined in the weekly Perpetual Help devotions and heard Redemptorists teach a theological meaning of her miraculous image. She is our mother ever ready to help us, showing us her son Jesus, and the source of Life.
On Monday, June 27th at 7:00 pm, the Redemptorists and friends will gather for province celebration of Perpetual Help at St. Alphonsus “The Rock” Church in St. Louis. Redemptorist Archbishop Joseph Tobin is the principal celebrant and homilist for the jubilee Mass, along with V. Rev. Stephen Rehrauer, C.Ss.R., provincial superior, and many Redemptorists and friends.
I pray you have experienced her wonderful help. Perhaps you’ve attended devotions and novenas to Our Mother of Perpetual Help at one of our parishes, spent time meditating on her image at a shrine, or had the pleasure of hearing a mission preached by our missionaries.
As a Co-Redemptorist you continue the mission of making her known. In the image of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, you and I see that Mary gives us a great gift; her Son. Will you please send a special gift to commemorate her wonderful feast day and support your Co-Redemptorist Association?
In Christ the Redeemer,
Father John K. Schmidt,
Director, Co-Redemptorist Association
P.S. I invite you to attend the celebration. It will also be telecast live on EWTN – check your local listings.
