Dear Mary's Child,
Have you recognized a fellow Catholic by spotting their rosary? Every day, you see rosaries hanging from mirrors on cars, worn around necks or wrists, tethered to key chains, or adorning framed pictures of loved ones. Yet how often does that rosary’s significance fade through disuse into simple decoration?
The Feast of the Holy Rosary is of great importance for all us who are devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Blessed Pope Paul VI spoke of the Rosary as a “compendium of the entire gospel…a prayer centered on redemptive Incarnation…in which the litany-like succession of Hail Marys becomes an unceasing praise of Christ.” (MC46)
When you pray the Rosary, you contemplate with Mary the Word of God made flesh, crucified, risen for your redemption. These mysteries of your salvation are emphasized when you pray the Rosary in the presence of the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help. The whole icon contains these mysteries through the symbolism of the icon.
I especially like to pray the rosary in the presence of the icon. I encourage you to try it, allowing yourself to be calmed and silenced by the rhythm of the Hail Mary, and experience the powerful presence of Mary with you. This is possible because the Rosary draws its inspiration from the gospels. The prayers of the Rosary are from the scriptures, thus you are praying the words of the gospel. You will find your mind and heart opened to the inner message contained in the Word of God.
Mary, Mother of Perpetual Help, pray with us as we contemplate the mysteries of our Redemption by praying the Rosary today!
In Jesus through Mary,
Brother Daniel Korn, C.Ss.R.
