Dear Mary's Child,
Mary’s birth was a miracle. Tradition tells us that her mother, Anne, was barren. She and her husband, Joachim, prayed unceasingly for God’s gift of parenthood. When Anne became pregnant, she pledged to devote Mary to God and so today, we celebrate Mary’s formal Presentation in the temple.
This stresses an important truth about Mary: from the beginning of her life, she was dedicated to God. She herself became a greater temple than any made by human hands. God came to dwell in her in a marvelous manner and sanctified her for her unique role in His saving work.
In the same way, you also presented your children to the Lord at their baptism. Through this baptism and prayer, you consecrated them to God. You asked Him to mold them into models of Christ’s love. Through the power of this sacrament, they have a share in the incarnation, passion, death and resurrection of Jesus.
Today, as you celebrate Mary’s Presentation, I ask you to meditate on why your children’s presentation for baptism was significant. Today is a reminder that each of us consecrated are called to reflect and share Mary’s legacy of salvation by living out our faith.
We each are temples of God. We are sanctified so we will forever enjoy and share in God's saving work. The magnificence of Mary and her guidance as written in the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help enriches you and me and all our children.
