Dear Mary's Child,

Light Your Presentation Candle

As Mary and Joseph make their way to the temple to offer the sacrifice required for their first-born male child, they encounter the holy Simeon and the prophetess Anna. I’m sure you’ve seen this scene presented through pictures, statues and stained glass windows.

The centerpiece of today’s feast is the offering of Jesus. It calls you to renew the dedication made at your Baptism. This feast reminds you who you are in Christ. As Simeon said in his canticle, you and I are to mirror Jesus as: “a light for revelation to the Gentiles and glory for your people Israel.” (Luke 2:32)

In the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, you see the image of offering. Mary is presenting you the Child Logos (God). Do you notice the position of her hands? Rather than holding tight to her child, she presents him to you, the beholder, offering to you the image of the Word.

On this Presentation feast day, Mary asks you to accept her Son. He is the light of the world, to shine the way for your salvation. Only by following his teaching can you gain eternal life.

Will you pray with me today in the presence of our beloved icon? Reflect and gaze upon the movement of Mary offering us the Word made Flesh. Embrace with me this Word of Life with love and devotion!

May Our Mother of Perpetual Help lead us into the mystery of Christ, the revealing Light of the World.

In Jesus, through Mary,
